Captain Sams:
We had a bit of action today at Captain Sam's! The radar predicted it to be fairly good for us comparatively so we were stoked to see what new species were going to come through. To our surprise we got a single Swainson's Thrush! A bird we'll be seeing a lot more of here soon. A majority of our haul today was Common Yellowthroats (like most days). You'd think we'd get tired of seeing so many of the same species but it just gives us all the more opportunity to focus on individuals even more. A great example of that was this after-hatch-year male we caught and banded today. When I walked up to it I could hear the clear call note of a yellowthroat but the color (with only seeing part of the body from afar) had me do a double take. I've seen many adult males in my time at KIBS and this bird especially stuck out to me, I'm not certain what made this bird so much more of a vibrant yellow/orange color. The photo may not translate very well but the intensity and complex structure of this individuals is somewhat reminiscent of a Prothonotary Warbler in some areas. Other notable happenings today were the sheer amount of mosquitos (mozzies), some nice raccoon tracks in the mud, and a decent number of shorebirds flying past us for morning flight.

Little Bear:
Today wasn't a bad day. We had a little bit of a better push of birds. We got a total of 43 birds. We also had some time to clear out some net lanes and paths that started to grow back. It's nice to walk to the nets without getting smacked in the face with all kinds of vegetation. We didn't add any new species to our station but when we got ready to leave at the main entrance where we park our vehicles, we saw a Blackpoll Warbler! I'm hoping it will be our first of the season tomorrow but who knows, maybe there will be even more than expected!
