CAPTAIN SAMS
Today was a great day out at Captain Sams, with a staggering 75 new birds and 6 recaptures for a total of 81 individuals! This is a vast difference from the past week of ~20 birds a day. The recent weather has been favorable for migration and the north-easterly winds brought in plenty of migrants. Our most abundant birds were common yellowthroats, of which we caught 41! They really lived up to the "common" part of their name because they were everywhere today!
In addition to the plentiful yellowthroats, we also caught Captain Sams' first worm-eating warbler of the season. It is always cool to catch these less common birds, especially on days where common yellowthroats take over.
The rest of the week is looking pretty good in terms of wind direction. Hopefully this will lead to more days like today (although I hope the yellowthroats will let other birds have their time in the limelight)!

LITTLE BEAR
Wet and gloomy conditions today at Little Bear. High N-NE winds resulted in keeping half of our nets open to start, with that number dwindling as the weather grew more intense. Be that as it may, we banded a total of 18 new birds and recaptured 2 birds (a majority of which was caught during the first net run). The crew found solace in our lack of mosquito bites, as it was windy enough to reduce insect activity at the station!
