Captain Sam's

Captain Sam's was rather uneventful today, catching 4 new birds and 4 recaptures of 5 species. Since it was slow, we spent some time mending nets with holes. The temperature rose quick and there was no breeze, so we closed a little early. We are definitely ready for migration to kick into gear and bring us more birds!

Today we had better luck than Captain Sam's with 12 new birds of 8 species, and 4 recaptures of 3 species. Our first of season was a gorgeous male Yellow-throated Warbler, we only catch a couple each year so it was a real treat to see such a beautiful bird in hand.

Yellow-throated Warblers in the eastern part of their range tend to have yellow lores (below) and longer bills.  In the western part of their range, most individuals have whitish lores (above) and shorter bills.  There is a smooth transition from yellow to white as you move east to west across their range.  Some consider the two separate subspecies however, variation in mitochondrial DNA is low compared to variation in phenotypic traits (McKay 2009), suggesting that differences in bill and plumage arose relatively rapidly in evolutionary time and may indicate that gene flow is ongoing and extensive throughout the species' range (McKay and Hall 2012).
