FOS House Finch

Captain Sam's:

Today at Captain Sam's, we banded mostly Common Yellowthroats. This shouldn't be a surprise anymore, but it is pretty amazing to see them continue to pour in. We were able to catch some other great birds as well!

A new Brown Thrasher, Gray Catbird, and 2 Northern Parulas were captured today. The Parulas were beautiful and a nice reprieve from the yellowthroats.

Additionally, we had a first-of-the-season bird today. A young male House Finch was captured close to the end of the day. We hear these regularly, but I was pleasantly surprised when Kristin brought one back to the table. This bird had a lot of red for a young bird, but was doing an eccentric molt, making it a hatch-year bird.

Little Bear:

It was a fine morning out at Little Bear, even though we caught only a third of as many birds as Captain Sams. Over half our captures were the now ubiquitous migrant Common Yellowthroats. As has been typical across the years for Little Bear, we catch significantly fewer of them than Captain Sams. But I'm optimistic that we can still manage a few days of several dozen of them this month. And we did have one first of season bird for the site this morning, our much anticipated first Gray Catbird.

Last year Gray Catbirds overtook Common Yellowthroats as Little Bear's most numerous capture, so I'm looking forward to working with a few hundred more of these guys over the next month!
