Banding today was a bit more productive than yesterday and some much appreciated cloud cover made the day more enjoyable for banders and birds alike. In total, we had 25 new birds banded, 9 recaptures, and 11 species processed. Some notable birds of the day were our first of the season American Redstart and Downy Woodpecker, both of which were hatch year males.
The most exciting bird for me was a beautiful Great Crested Flycatcher, a bird which I saw briefly in Nova Scotia, CA, but had never banded before. Check out the molt limit in the greater coverts and primary flight feathers in the photo below, which helped us to determine the age of this individual: a hatch year.
Today was also a great day for Painted Buntings, as we caught two after second year males, showing off their vibrant trifecta of red, blue, and green plumage. The individual shown below was molting many of its back feathers, as well as flight feathers, which is why its back looks a bit "scruffy." Both of these individuals were already banded, but we also banded 9 new Painted Buntings during the day.
