21st of September

Captain Sam's:

We only banded at Captain Sam's today due to strong winds at Little Bear, but we ended up capturing a decent number of birds (58 new birds, 10 recaptures). We also got another FOS bird: a Least Flycatcher! In true Empidonax fashion, these flycatchers are dull gray-olive with white wing bars and thus difficult to visually identify to the species level in the field. Thankfully, they are fairly simple to distinguish in the hand from "Traill's" Flycatchers, the most common flycatcher species we catch at KIBS. Least Flycatchers are smaller overall with a relatively shorter bill and wings, and have a distinct white eye ring that is somewhat wider behind the eye.  Additionally, they are the only eastern empid that always exhibits emargination on p6 (the sixth primary feather).  Emargination is when the outer web of a feather is indented or "cut-out" (see photo below).

Example of emargination on a Nelson's Sparrow

While today was slower than the past two days, the Birdcast forecast is looking great mid-week. Maybe we'll get our first 200 bird day!
