Baby Baby Buntings

Captain Sam's

It was my second day in South Carolina and boy is it muggy. We had a fun day, but rather slow again with 8 new birds banded and 5 recaps of 6 species. I really enjoyed seeing the differences in the molts and ages of the painted buntings. We had a couple of hatch-year birds who are just beginning to explore on their own and molt into their first plumage. They look drastically different than a brilliant, adult (after-second year) male. The bird below is one of those drab, awkward looking young.

Little Bear

We had a very slow morning out at Little Bear with 4 new birds and 1 recapture of only 2 species, which has to be one of the slowest if not the slowest day ever at the site. Unfortunately, the heat is causing us to shut down around 9:00 AM every morning, but there is not much bird activity after that time anyway. This pattern looks to continue for awhile but hopefully we get a wind shift and some more migrants. It has definitely been a slower start to the season compared to previous seasons.
