Last nights radar, showed that there was significant bird movement around Kiawah Island. We started out this morning with only accomplishing 1 net check before we closed our nets. We had roughly 100 birds in one check! After we caught up on banding, we reopened some of our nets to continue capturing birds. We got 8 new species for Captain Sam's, which were Cape May Warbler, Veery, Gray Catbird, Worm-eating Warbler, Palm Warbler, Swainson's Thrush, Northern Parula, and Indigo Bunting. We captured a total of 181 new birds and 7 recaptures.
Overall I think this was a great day, and we all had fun seeing new birds. Hopefully tomorrow will be another busy day, and we have continued success.

Little Bear:
Little Bear had its highest capture rate ever today. We started our first net checks with birds lighting up each mist net. Birds were literally flying into the nets as we stood there extracting. It was slightly stressful, but nice for a change to be this busy. Almost every net had between 7-20 birds with good numbers of American Redstarts, Red-eyed Vireos, and tons of Common Yellowthroats (73 total). We had some early Gray Catbirds and several Veery. Today's highlights included a Nashville Warbler and a young Chesnut-sided Warbler with a beautiful green head. Many of our birds scored very high in fat. Passerines will build up fat in areas for long distance migration. We believe a number of these birds had been waiting for hurricane Florence to pass by and had been stocking up on their energy reserves. In total we had 145 birds banded of 20 species. Personally, it was the most birds I've extracted in a single day, and I'm excited for tomorrow.
