Captain Sam’s:
Is it September again? It sure feels like it. We have encountered near 100% humidity and temperatures that feel like 80℉. North winds seems to have been pushed to a standstill. Tropical storm Eta to the south of us is slowly creeping inland, and may be part of the reason for the unseasonably high temperatures. There are apparently two other depressions forming over the ocean at the moment as well, including a record breaking 29th named system: Theta! The forecast outlook does not look so great for the next three days or so. From my time in the coastal South, I’ve learned that a 30% chance of rain equates to a “yeah it’s probably going to rain somewhere sometime today, maybe where we are, maybe over that way, can’t be too sure.” However, an 80% chance of rain in the forecast is pretty much guaranteed. There’s always a chance at a rain free window, but dancing around rain showers and potentially thunderstorms is never too fun. I guess we’ll have to wait and see what the winds bring us.

Little Bear:
Our banding session this morning had a strong start- it wasn't windy for a change, and we caught a decent assortment of birds on our first net run including Hermit Thrush, Swamp Sparrow, and Orange-crowned Warbler. But as Vince explained, Eta has forced unseasonably warm and humid weather upon us. Once the sun burned through the clouds, there weren't too many birds left hopping around. We ended up catching 12 birds total (Hey, still better than the past few days). While sitting under our hot canopy tent before closing, it felt odd to reminisce about last season at this time, when we dealing with banding delays due to the cold and having frosty nets in the morning. I'm not sure that we'll be seeing temps get that low again before the end of the month but maybe in a few days, after all of the rain has passed, we'll be able to enjoy some cooler 'fall-like' mornings, and catch of few more species of Sparrows and other late season specialties that we typically get to enjoy around this time of year.
