Captain Sam's:
We had a surprisingly better day than expected with 93 new birds and 14 recaptures of 24 species. While we were waiting to go on the the first net run, there was a lot of activity in the pine trees above the banding table. Ben grabbed the bins and spotted a handful of Northern Parulas and Cape May Warblers flitting around. The first net run was quite busy, but it slowed down quickly after that which gave me some time to repair net 15 which probably had an unfortunate encounter with a deer antler. The highlight of the day included our 3rd Rose-breasted Grosbeak of the season and 10th ever. Rose-breasted Grosbeaks are not captured every year and this is the first time we have ever captured more than 2 in a season.

We also got Captain Sam's first of the season Tennessee Warbler. Tennessee Warblers are not very common along the coast during the fall as most of the population apparently takes a more inland route. Some years we only band 1 or 2 Tennessee Warblers, while other years we may band as many as 15-20. A good west wind during the time when they are migrating increases our odds of catching them in any given year.

Little Bear:
It wasn't as busy of a day at Little Bear as at Captain Sam's, but we still had a nice morning with 54 birds captured. We banded our first Ruby-crowned Kinglet of the season, and had some sharp looking Cape May Warblers. Both of our Cape Mays were hatch-years, but one was much more colorful than the other. While some warblers, like Tennessee Warbler, can not typically be sexed during their first fall, Cape Mays exhibit strong sexual dimorphism soon after leaving the nest. I always enjoy observing the subtle greenish and yellow tones of the duller hatch-year females, but the bold black and yellow males are a treat to have in the hand as well.
