Captain Sam's:
Today was a lot cooler day! With a total of 86 birds captured, only 14 of those individuals were recaptures. We had a total of 15 species today, which is super exciting and I hope this number increases as more birds start to move south. The excitement today was seeing this nice looking after second year Painted Bunting (which is absolutely stunning!) When looking at the photos below, its like you are seeing a whole rainbow on just one bird! Hopefully this cool weather coming up this week will push in some more great days!
Little Bear:
This morning at Little Bear we were grateful for the overcast skies and cooler temperature (only 75 degrees at opening!), but had to deal with a constant north wind hitting several of our nets. We were fortunate to still catch 44 birds, thanks in particular to the gradually increasing number of Common Yellowthroats. Its been good to get some practice with modest numbers of this species before the arrival of the huge numbers that make them one of our most numerous captures every season. The next few days looks pretty much the same, and we're optimistic for some interesting new migrants to be mixed in with all the Yellowthroats.
