Labor Day at KIBS

Captain Sam's:

We had a much slower day than the past two. When you're banding anything around 100 birds in a day, a day below 50 seems as slow as molasses. We did end up banding 25 individuals and processing 8 recaptures. North easterly and easterly winds through the night kept most of the migration inland rather than pushing new birds out to the coast. It was an overcast morning for the majority of the time so we enjoyed sweating a little less at least. The rest of the week is looking like similar conditions so we will just keep hoping for some unexpected captures.

Little Bear:

Today was probably the coolest of the season, thanks to rain last night and a light breeze this morning. We had a steady stream of birds, and despite the wind conditions, we were able to keep most of our nets open up until close. No FOS birds, but we had some species of note such as a Yellow-breasted Chat and an Eastern Kingbird. This was the first Kingbird I've personally had in the hand, and it was cool to see the bright orange crown that gave the bird its name. Often the crown is difficult to spot in the field, but Kingbirds will raise it to intimidate predators or territory intruders.

Eastern Kingbirds are summer visitors here, so they're sadly on their way out of the Lowcountry this time of year. Hopefully we will catch a few more before they all leave for their wintering grounds in South America!
