Migration has slowed down quite a bit this week. We finished the day with 32 new birds and 8 recaps of 8 different species. Despite the low amount of captures, we managed to get Captain Sam's first ever Saltmarsh Sparrow! This is a species Aaron Given, our Master Bander/Kiawah wildlife biologist, bands during the winter months. Saltmarsh Sparrows breed further north along the Atlantic Coast and spend their winter months further south, including here on Kiawah Island.

Little Bear
It was another windy day out at Little Bear, but we were able to open most of the nets for the first net run. After the first run, the wind picked up and allowed us to only keep 8 nets open like the past couple days. We only caught 14 new birds and 3 recaptures of 6 species before we had to close the remaining nets early due to the wind. Unfortunately, this trend looks to continue for the rest of the week but we did have this Timber Rattlesnake in our path to one of our nets!
