Captain Sam's
This morning started out with a bang but by the 2nd net run the bird activity had dropped off quickly. Like yesterday the skies seemed to be filled with birds as we could hear them flying over in the dark as we opened the nets. As the sun rose above the horizon, the birds started dropping into the shrubs and small trees around the banding site. But unlike yesterday, many of the birds found our nets before their mass exodus from the island. A bulk of the species today consisted of Yellow-rumped Warblers with 69 of the 98 bird banded belonging to this gregarious species. From now until the end of the season (November 30th), Yellow-rumped Warblers will rule the site. They appear to have arrived a little later than normal this year and by the looks of tonight's radar, there are many more to come.

Little Bear
Today was another very slow day at Little Bear, with 29 new birds and 8 recaptures of 8 species. Although overall numbers were low, we saw a slight increase in Yellow-rumped Warblers and Ruby-crowned Kinglets. We're starting to see fewer new Gray Catbirds, although we're still getting plenty of recaptures and they still seem to be the most common species we are hearing/seeing in the area. Swamp Sparrows are our most common sparrow caught in the fall, and today we also got two Song Sparrows as well as one White-throated Sparrow.
