We had a slight increase in numbers today with a total of 51 new birds banded and 17 birds recaptured. The increase in numbers was likely due to lack of wind and overcast skies which makes the nets less visible and there for more effective. Mixed in with a flock Yellow-rumped Warblers was a new species for the season: a Chipping Sparrow. Chipping sparrows can be recognized by their bold eyeline, small size, forked tail, and grayish unstreaked breast. During the breeding season, they have a striking rufous cap and whitish supercilium. Including the Chipping Sparrow from today, we are officially at 82 species for the season!
