Captain Sam's
Both sites got off to delayed starts due to storms this AM. We frequently had to open and close nets for short periods of time throughout the day. We had 41 new birds and 12 recaps of 10 species this morning. The Catbirds continue to dominate as our top species. We are also starting to keep our eye on Hurricane Michael this week, as it is expected to move our way with strong winds. After that, we are hoping for significant pushes of migrants following a cold front from the north!

Little Bear
It was a rainy and windy morning out at Little Bear. We made it out to the site in the morning just in time to get the tent up before it started pouring. After opening, we were constantly shutting down nets throughout the morning until the combination of wind and rain caused us to completely shut down mid-morning. We ended the day with 19 new birds and 1 recapture of 7 species. Even though the weather did not cooperate and we did not get a lot of banding hours in, we did catch a first-of-the-season Lincoln's Sparrow! This is one of the rarer sparrow species we catch, and we have not caught one since the fall of 2015 where we caught two, one at each site.
