Lots of recaptured birds at Captain Sam's today-- 45 total (36 of which were Catbirds) along with 56 new birds banded for the day. We are still experiencing cooler temperatures, which allowed us to keep nets open longer and made the day much more pleasant for the banders. Sixteen species were banded, including a first-of-the-season for Captain Sam's: Swamp Sparrow! We caught two of these birds during the day, and Meredith was able to band them both since she had never banded a Swamp Sparrow before. New species are always exciting for us!

Little Bear
Today was a great day! It was a nice cool morning and stayed pretty cool for most of the day. We had a total of 44 newly banded birds and 26 recaptures. We got our first of the season Golden-crowned Kinglet and Red-breasted Nuthatch. This was actually the first ever Red-breasted Nuthatch caught at the Little Bear banding site. Both these birds were beautiful and exciting to see! It was a kind of a surprise that a Red-breasted Nuthatch showed up at Little Bear. The habitat out there is low-growing and shrubby compared to the typical habitat they prefer. Red-breasted Nuthatches are mainly found in forests dominated by conifers but can also be found in habitat constructed of more deciduous trees as well.
