Captain Sam's:
Today wasn't too busy, but with how the winds are blowing it is what's expected. This morning was quite a weird one. There was just enough haziness to the air to make it feel sticky. The haze was pretty much at eye level and you could sometimes see for a few moments and then you couldn't. We ended our morning with 42 birds; 23 of those newly banded. I would say the highlight of the day was catching an Eastern Screech-Owl. You don't usually get a calm one, but this cutie was very calm. The "ear" tufts are not actually their ears but just feathers on top of the head. These tufts do not aid in the owl's ability to hear but probably serve more of a function to help with non-verbal communication and camouflage. An owl's ears are actually hidden behind the feathers on the side of its head. Their ears are asymmetrical with one ear being slightly higher on the head than the other. This helps the owl hone in on its prey by detecting the sound in one ear microseconds before the other making them an excellent hunter. As we kick into October, I'm hoping to see more cold fronts coming our way and bringing in those sweet tweets of migratory birds!

Little Bear:
At Little Bear today we had an unexpectedly calm day which would have been wonderful for catching birds if overnight winds had been more in our favor. Our first net run ended up being not so bad for a day like today and it slowed down fairly quick after that. Some species we've been seeing less of lately made an appearance today; Prairie Warbler and Painted Bunting. I had a really nice time getting to look very closely at the House Wrens today too. Such small escape artists they try to be!
Those feet are tangled,
You are making this harder,
Thanks a lot House Wren
