Today was a great day! There was a total of 51 newly banded birds and 20 recaptures. We got a new bird of the season, the Tennessee Warbler!
Tennessee Warblers are a very uncommon migrating bird that can pass through the coast side on South Carolina. Given their name, Tennessee Warbler are not found in Tennessee, but they do pass through during migration. They breed up north, mainly in Canada.

Little Bear
Although not quite as exciting as yesterday, today was a great day for banding at Little Bear. In total we had 82 new birds, 5 recaptures, and 17 species total. Two of those species were new for the site this season-- a Hooded Warbler and two Blue Grosbeaks. Joanne was excited to band these new species since she had seen neither of them in the hand before. My favorite birds of the day were an after hatch-year Yellow-billed Cuckoo and several Indigo Buntings. While processing birds, we also had a Pileated Woodpecker fly right by the banding table. It is rare to see these birds at Little Bear since they typically prefer more forested habitat. Fingers crossed that one will fly into our nets!
