Captain Sam's
Today was another blustery day which forced us to close about a third of our nets down early. The cool fall weather let us keep our more sheltered nets open for the full six hours, something that hasn't happened all season due to heat. With the cool weather we got a wonderful assortment of birds, especially late migrants such as sparrows and Myrtle Warblers. Some notable birds today were the FOS Song Sparrow, a beautiful Red-breasted Nuthatch, and a young Yellow-bellied Sapsucker. Today we had 57 birds banded of 20 species, and 10 recaptures of 2 species.
An interesting thing about Song Sparrows is their 'leapfrog' migration pattern. This is where birds at the northern end of the range travel the furthest south, while birds in the middle of the range only migrate a short distance. Thus the northern populations jump over the southern ones. In the case of Song Sparrows, birds from Alaska and Canada jump over birds in the Northern US as they travel to Mexico and the Southern States.

Little Bear
Fall weather this AM brought us a delightful array of birds, despite wind shutting us down quickly. We ended our first net run with a nice mix including FOS Song Sparrow, a Bay-breasted Warbler (BBWA; FOS for Little Bear), and a Yellow-bellied Sapsucker. We also recaught the Blackpoll who has been hanging around for several days. It was nice to see the Blackpoll and Bay-breasted Warbler within minutes of each other, as they can be quite confusing for birders in fall plumage. The BBWA was a nice male with some chestnut coloration on his sides, and black legs/feet. The Blackpoll can average more black on the flanks and will almost always have yellow feet/legs. Today, we totaled 47 new birds with 8 recaps of 19 species.
