Thanks to some favorably light winds our numbers picked up today with 33 new birds banded and 15 recaps of 14 species. It was a sparrow-filled day as well, with five different species of sparrows caught: Chipping Sparrow, Field Sparrow, Song Sparrow, Swamp Sparrow, and White-throated Sparrow.

We also captured a Ruby-crowned Kinglet with a few yellow-orange feathers in its crown rather than the typical red.

Little Bear:
This morning offered some relief from the recent strong winds, and we were able to open all of Little Bear's nets for a change. Although we missed out on all of the Sparrow diversity that they enjoyed at Captain Sam's, we were pleased to catch 34 birds of 13 different species. A Blue-headed Vireo and Northern Flicker were great birds to get in the hand, the latter being a first of the season at Little Bear. We also caught a young male Ruby-throated Hummingbird, which is a species we have to release un-banded due to their minuscule size. Similarly favorable conditions for tomorrow morning have us excited to get back out and see how much more we can catch in our final week.
