We started out this morning with 9 newly banded birds and 3 recaptures. We got our first of the season Prothonotary Warbler for Captain Sam's. The highlight of the day consisted of our newly joined KIBS members Joanne and Joel! They both got to experience the site and learn the net paths. After we ended the day, we drove on down to the Ocean Golf Course and checked out some shorebirds!
The bird of the day would be the Prothonotary Warbler and the adult Eastern Kingbird. I know the Prothonotary Warbler has been posted quite a bit, but incase you would like to see what they look like, check out our older blog!
Pictured below is Aaron, giving instruction on aging a Painted Bunting to our new team members, and an Eastern Kingbird. This is our first adult Kingbird that we have handled this season! You can see the beautiful orange crown that they can get up on their heads. This is rarely seen when looking at them from a distance.

Hot, hot day out at the exposed Little Bear site! Temperatures sky rocketed early and we had to close nets the earliest yet, around 9 am. Despite the very short time we were open, we managed to catch 7 new birds and 4 recaptures of 7 species. Our highlight bird was also an adult Eastern Kingbird showing a nice orange crown. It was my first time to band at Little Bear, so despite closing early, it was nice to get out there and start learning the net numbers and routes. Danaé had an extra fun morning (not!) after walking through a large group of tiny ticks, covering her pants! Ticks are not her favorite. An immediate shower and laundry was in store when we got home. Hoping this hot trend doesn't keep up very much longer so we can keep nets open later out there.
