After being out of town for a few days, it was good to be back to banding at Captain Sam's! We were steady all morning catching a total of 90 birds (82 new, 8 recaps). We recaptured the same Tennessee Warbler that's been hanging around and I got to band my first Summer Tanager. I also got to see my first adult male Black-throated Blue Warbler. It turned out to be an S. c. cairnsi subspecies (aka Appalachian) that breeds in the Appalachians from southwestern Pennsylvania and West Virginia south to northern Georgia. The two subspecies of Black-throated Blue Warblers are based on plumage shade. In this particular one, males have a darker blue crown with a black-blotched back. The S. c. caerulescens subspecies breeds from southeastern Canada into Minnesota and east to Pennsylvania. These males have a deep steel-blue back and a paler crown (see Birds of North America for more information). The photos below show the two subspecies for comparison.

Little Bear
Today was a slower day than yesterday at Little Bear, and as per usual, the sun was out in full force causing us to close nets earlier than yesterday. We were able to band 47 new birds and recapture 2, for a total of 10 species. Common Yellowthroats were our most banded bird of the day and our influx of Catbirds seems to have died down for the time being. Common Yellowthroats typically have two spikes or peaks in their migration, and it appears that we are currently experiencing one of these. Over the next several days, we will likely continue to catch many more individuals of this species. These birds are one of the most frequent species banded at KIBS, so they really do live up to the "common" part of their name (and the "yellowthroat" part too, for that matter).
