Captain Sams:
We ran a full crew at Captain Sam’s today due to the heavy winds we’re facing here on the island. Wind speeds above 15 mph make opening Little Bear quite tough. The migration radar for last night was phenomenal. All of us last night went outside our house and could hear many birds giving their nocturnal flight calls as they were passing over. The crazy winds associated with the cold front don’t usually bode heavy catch days for us but you never know. We ended up with fewer birds than we would typically see on a high migration day like today but still had lots of fun. Super notable bird of the day is our THIRD Black-Billed Cuckoo of the season. It’s been such a crazy year for them at the station I’m honestly not sure this one will be the last.
I was very shocked we didn’t get a first of season today just with the sheer number of species moving. In our time before our first net run some of us were doing our daily morning count by the river and had 6 warbler species hanging out in the same loblolly pine we were sitting in; Black-throated Blue Warbler, Northern Parula, Palm Warbler, Ovenbird, American Redstart, and Common Yellowthroat!
