Virtual Tour of KIBS (Little Bear part 2)

The other five nets on the south side of the dune are not as low in elevation as the ones I highlighted yesterday.  These don't get flooded as often and if they do, the water is not as deep and does not persist as long.   

NET 11

Net 11 was created in 2015.  This net is located perpendicular to the ridge of the dune.  This net is only about 25 feet from the banding table.  Like so many other net lanes at Little Bear, net 11 used to have a lot more vegetative cover around it but after several large wax myrtles died, the net is much more open now.  Net 11 has captured 1,180 birds (963 new, 217 recaptures).

NET 15

Net 15 was created in 2016.  It has captured 802 birds (640 new, 162 recaptures).  This net is located on the back side of the dune from net 11.  This net has dense vegetation on both sides of the lane with several cabbage palms mixed in.  Surprisingly, this net captured a Seaside Sparrow in 2017 despite not being anywhere near the saltmarsh.

NET 12

Net 12 was created in 2016.  This net has a nice mix of palms, cedars, lower shrubs, and grasses surrounding it.  Because of this diversity, this is one of the more productive nets.  It has captured 1,086 birds (864 new, 222 recaptures) and in 2018 is caught a Kirtland's Warbler!

NET 22

Net 22 was created in 2020.  This is one of the nets that we had hoped would be more sheltered from the wind due to the denser vegetation around it.  This wind still blows here but it is not as bad as many others.  It captured 130 birds last year (104 new, 26 recaptures).

NET 14

Net 14 was created in 2016.  This net is located furthest away from the dune ridge.  It has several cabbage palms that are concentrated mostly at the ends of the net but is fairly open especially on the south side.  It has captured 1,034 birds (846 new, 188 recaptures).
