Virtual Tour of KIBS (Captain Sam's part 6)

Today's nets include 20, 30, 33, and 9.  These nets are located along the Kiawah River and are nestled among a matrix of saltmarsh and scrub.  During extreme high tide events, it can be a struggle to check these nets as most of the trails are flooded in 1-2 feet of water.

 Net 20

Net 20 was created in 2012.  This net is located along the edge of the saltmarsh.  This net is very "viney" with dense thickets of Smilax on both sides.  The net starts low along the saltmarsh on the north side and goes uphill toward the top of the dune.  Net 20 has captured 2,063 birds (1,704 new birds, 359 recaptures).

Net 30

Net 30 was initiated in 2015.  This net is located on a small hummock island completely surrounded by saltmarsh and is located right along Kiawah River.  This net can be very productive but it also very exposed to wind and sun therefore many days it only open during the first couple of net runs.  Net 30 has captured 1,217 birds (1,080 new, 137 recaptures) including 1 of the 3 Loggerhead Shrikes that have been banded at Captain Sam's.

Net 33

Net 33 was a new net that was put in place in 2020.  This net was kind of an experiment to see what kind of birds might be captured in the grassy high marsh area along the river where we don't have any other nets.  The result of the experiment was that not many birds moved through that area as Net 33 only captured 97 birds (79 new, 18 recaptures) last season representing only 1.7% of all the birds banded last fall.

Net 9

Net 9 was created during the winter of 2010 and made its fall debut in 2011.  This net is located on a scrubby dune along the river.  It is surrounded by low vegetation that is mostly covered in vines.  It has a large cedar tree located at the west end of the night that was partially uprooted by a hurricane a few years back.  The tree is still alive and standing but has created a substantial trip hazard in the middle of the net lane.  Net 9 has captured 2,909 birds (2,502 new, 407 recaptures).  A Sora was a surprise capture in this net in 2019.
