Post Front Slow Down

Captain Sam's

The bird activity has continued to slow down at Captain Sam’s with only 30 new birds and 8 recaptures today.  Although it was on the slow side, we did have a nice variety of species including Worm-eating Warbler, Cape May Warbler, and Baltimore Oriole.  The most numerous species at Captain Sam’s continues to be Common Yellowthroat and Red-eyed Vireo.  This year seems to be shaping up to be a good year for Red-eyed Vireos with 123 being banded so far.

Little Bear
As expected, migration has really slowed down in the wake of the cold front, despite continuing cooler temperatures and northerly wind. Today we banded only 13 new birds with 1 recapture, of a total of 8 species. We are still catching new Northern Cardinals, and our usual suspects, but the highlight of the day was definitely another gorgeous hatch year female Baltimore Oriole. We've probably already mentioned, but we don't usually catch many of these beauties per year, so it's always exciting to get another, and this little lady gave us quite a puzzle when it came to aging her. A good way to spend a slow net check!
