Captain Sam's:
BRR- Captain Sam's was especially chilly this morning, our opening temp was 42.2 degrees! We captured a lot of our winter regulars like the Myrtle Warblers and Ruby-crowned Kinglets. With it being slowish at the station, we were able to smell nearly every bird caught today. As always the Myrtles smelled of Christmas. Yesterday we had a Song Sparrow that smelled exactly like licorice, but today our one Song Sparrow smelled like seeds! We closed early to go and help Little Bear pack up, and we ended the day with 20 birds total of 6 species.

Little Bear:
Today was the very last day of the season at Little Bear. We enjoyed one last sunrise off East Beach, which sharply contrasted those of late summer as we could barely feel our hands upon returning to the table. Thankfully, Kristin had her hand warmer and I had my coffee.
We had a very slow day, catching only 4 birds. We took down the nets as we went until there was almost no sign we were ever there.
I greatly enjoyed my time at this site and all the awesome birds we caught. Egrets, herons, doves, hawks, catbirds, cardinals, woodpeckers, cuckoos, thrushes, buntings, vireos, kingfishers, flycatchers, nightjars, warblers, sparrows, and kinglets; Little Bear had it all.
Thank you Kristin for keeping a tight ship and running the show out there. Thank you grackles who adorned the driftwood throne at sunrise. Thank you tides for showing me how drastically a coastal ecosystem can change within a day. Thank you mosquitos for the discomfort. Thank you ocean breeze for the comfort. Thank you sun for the shine. Thank you clouds for the shade. Thank you myrtle warblers for your fragrance. Thank you butterflies, moths, flies, wasps, and beetles for pollinating the plants. Thank you reader for reading.
