Getting to Know the Island's Birds

Woke up to a hot and muggy morning. The birds must've felt it too, as today was a slow capture day. We captured 7 new birds and 6 recaptures of 6 species  Being a slow day, the new seasonal banders were able to get to know the site better in terms of navigating the net lanes and started checking the nets on their own.  With the day ending early, the crew headed out to Little Bear to carry out supplies and set up a few nets to get ready for the season.

After a well-earned lunch, the girls went birding along the east end of the island to see the large gathering of shorebirds. It was a great time with several "lifers" achieved! A lifer is a species seen for the first time by that birder. They'll definitely continue to birdwatch there throughout the season.
