Captain Sam's:
Todays hot and humid weather brought 20 new birds and 12 recaps of 14 species to Captain Sam's. An exciting bird for me today was this adult male Prairie Warbler (below). Not having spent much time on the east coast, this was a life bird for me! Most Prairie Warblers breed in the eastern United States and winter in Florida and the Caribbean islands, but there is a small non-migratory population that lives in the Florida mangroves year-round.
A few of our banders spotted a collared bobcat at the banding site today! The town of Kiawah deployed telemetry collars on bobcats years ago to track their movements across the island.

Little Bear:
Today was our first day banding after hurricane Dorian. To our surprise we captured some great birds today! We started the first few net runs with quite a bit of birds, making Northern Waterthrush the most banded bird today. We captured our first of the season Yellow-bellied flycatcher and Solitary Sandpiper! Yes, I said it! Solitary Sandpiper. This is the first Shorebird to fly into KIBS nets! While we were closing down for the day we came up to this bird in one of our nets near the top pocket. The area that the net is located at, seemed like it would be an ideal area for a sandpiper to land near. This fellow was probably trying to find food, but instead found our net!
Solitary Sandpipers breed in the arctic and migrate throughout North America, wintering in middle America to South America. Foraging along muddy shores and shallow waters. An interesting fact about these birds is that instead of building nest during breeding season, they use old nest from other birds. These old nest were usually from Robins to Blackbirds or nest that are near the trunks of small trees near the ground. I think this is a great way to save energy and focus of surviving!
