Today was still a high number day, totaling with 117 birds! Our highlights of the day were some late migrant birds that should have passed through, the Blue Grosbeak and Scarlet Tanager. These guys make their way about mid-fall but some birds that decided to leave late might still show up. With the start of high numbers of Myrtle Warblers, our wintering birds are starting to show up.
Later in the day, we participated in Saltmarsh Banding on Kiawah Island. We captured a total of 5 species, including, Clapper Rail, Seaside Sparrow, Nelson's Sparrow, Saltmarsh Sparrow, and Marsh Wren. I think everyone had a great time running through the water and getting a little wet! Here are some of the great birds we captured during the Saltmarsh Banding!

Little Bear:
What started out as a slow day turned into an exciting one with two first of seasons, a Song Sparrow and a Cooper's Hawk! Cooper's Hawks are year-round residents of Kiawah Island and Charleston county so we see them frequently at both sites, but only get them in the nets occasionally if we're lucky. While the adult male below may seem large, the females of most raptor species are significantly larger than the males.
