This morning started out cold and windy. This was the coldest morning of the fall with the temperature reading 37.2⁰ F at 6:00am. Despite the cold, I banded 27 new birds and had 15 recaptures of 11 different species. One surprise was a late Tennessee Warbler that was captured later in the day in one of the dune nets. It has been a good year for Tennessee Warblers at Captain Sam's with 7 banded so far for the season. Some years we are lucky to catch even one.

Sometimes when you walk up to a mist net you never know what you might find. Over the years we have had some interesting things show up such as snakes, lizards, bats, bees, horseflies, dragonflies, grasshoppers, and other things that I cannot remember right now. And every once in a while we find the remains of another animal sitting in the net. Today, I found the carcass of what I believe to be a Sharp-shinned Hawk. Undoubtedly, what happened was the net got in the way of a Cooper's Hawk carrying its meal. When the Cooper's Hawk hit the net, it dropped its breakfast into the net. Cooper's Hawks rarely get caught in our nets because the nets are designed to capture smaller birds. They also have no problem preying upon their closely related cousins - Sharp-shinned Hawks.
