We caught 34 birds at Captain Sam's today, 18 of which were new birds and 14 were recaptures. One fun catch was a male hatch-year Black-throated Blue Warbler! At KIBS we age most birds using molt limits. A molt limit is the location of feathers that have been replaced, and you can differentiate the retained juvenile feathers from the new feathers. This warbler, for example, has replaced one of its alula feathers on the leading edge of its wing. In the picture below, the small blue-edged feather has been grown more recently, while the green-edged feather is one of its juvenile feathers. Molt limits can be very subtle, with new and old feathers looking almost identical, but some can be easy to find like in this bird!

Little Bear:
Today was a slow day! Only a total of 19 birds were captured today. We did however, capture our first of the season Cape May Warbler! These warbler are quite unique compared to some other warblers. They have a different tongue shape that is semi-tubular and curled. This allows the Cape May Warblers to collect nectar from flowers in their wintering grounds.
