9/11/15

Captain Sam's
We experienced similar bird activity as yesterday this morning at Captain Sam's. We banded 23 new individuals and recaptured 8 of 12 species. Our catch had nice variety and was made up of a number of resident and migrant species. Common Yellowthroats and Painted Buntings were the most abundant species of the day, we also had decent warbler activity with 7 different warbler species banded. The highlight of our day showed up in our very first net round, a female after hatch-year Black-throated Blue Warbler.

Little Bear
It was another slow day at Little Bear this morning with 16 new birds banded and 3 recaptures of 11 species. Our first net run showed promise with a good amount of birds, but the number of birds caught tapered off drastically as the morning went on. There were some migrants passing through the site, such as the Northern Waterthrush, which we caught a few more of today along with more resident Northern Cardinals. Also, we saw some Bobolinks flying through the site (hopefully we catch one!). The highlight of the morning was a Scarlet Tanager (below), which was the first of the season between both sites. There is a front coming in over the weekend, which should bring us good numbers into the week.
