We had a pretty good start to the 2019 fall migration banding season with 42 new birds and 9 recaptures of 11 different species. We had no real surprises as everything that we captured was expected for this time of year with exception to the Tufted Titmice. Tufted Titmice are one of the most common songbirds on Kiawah Island but they rarely occur around the banding site. Both birds were adults so there is a good chance that they might have nested on site.
Another species that we regularly catch but only early in the season are Great Crested Flycatchers. They nest on site but usually clear out by early September. Today we banded 4 of them which is a good number for one day.
I'm looking forward to working with another great banding crew this fall. Half of this season's banding assistants arrive on Saturday and the other half will arrive at the end of August/early September. I'll introduce them in a few days.

LITTLE BEAR
The Little Bear site is still in the process of getting setup. I've got 10 nets lanes cleared and 7 nets up with another 10 nets lanes still needing to be cleared. I'm hoping to get Little Bear up and running by August 22nd if not sooner.
On August 12th I opened 6 nets up a Little Bear with the intention of catching 3 Painted Buntings for a new radio telemetry project studying post breeding movements of Painted Buntings using the Motus network (https://motus.org/). In a period of almost 3 hours we banded 10 Painted Buntings, 2 Carolina Chickadees, and 1 Northern Cardinal along with 2 recaptured Painted Buntings. I was successful finding 3 suitable candidates to wear radio transmitters. One of the recaptured Painted Buntings was a special bird that was wearing a geolocator, a different type of tracking device that I put on him last summer at a different part of the Kiawah. This bird was recaptured 3 times last fall at Little Bear so I was hoping that we would catch him again and retrieve all the data that he has been carrying on his back for over a year.
