Storms and a Chat

Captain Sam's: 

Another first time blog author: my name is Aidan Place and I just arrived at KIBS a couple days ago. Beyond excited to be spending the fall banding here!

Winds out of the south have kept the nets quiet for the four days I've been working here and today was no exception. However, what today lacked in birds was more than made up for by weather, with boiling thunderheads just off the coast providing some high drama in the early morning. We anxiously watched the radar as the storms just barely slid by us, and enjoyed some dazzling lightnight strikes and rolling thunderheads that almost looked as if they were alive.

Birdwise, today was not completely without highlights as we caught the first Yellow-breasted Chat of the season! This elegant species was classed as a warbler until recently when taxonomists came to their senses and put it in its own family: Icteriidae.
