Captain Sams:
Today was another great day working at Captain Sams. It is nice getting back out to this station after a wonderful season at Little Bear. I love both of these station, because they have such a nice variety of birds that can be captured. Today we ended up with a total of 52 birds! 37 were newly banded and we had 15 recaptures.
Our recaptures were really fun, due to the fact that most of them were Myrtle Warblers that were previously banded prior years. Our oldest one we recaptured today was banded back in 2017! This little cutie was also aged as an after-hatch year then so this makes the bird 7+ years old! that's so crazy!
Another wonderful highlight of the day was hearing Aaron say that he captured a really good bird. I could not think what we would have captured except maybe the Sedge Wren that we attempted early this morning. When we got back to the table, I pulled out this wonderful flycatcher, pictured below, and after taking some measurements, we were excited to announce it was an Ash-throated Flycatcher!
It has been a few years (2019) since I last seen one in the hand so this was such an awesome bird to get to hold again for the second time!
This will be my last post for the season and I love to thank everyone for helping out at the station and watching everyone learn so much over the past 3 months. I am really grateful that Aaron allowed me to come back again and help run the station. I did make a wonderful mark this year at Little Bear, ending the season with 86 species, the highest Little Bear has captured so far over the years. I tried to beat the record birds banded year as well, but fell short of 62 birds. It was nice to get it that high and see so many birds.
