Virtual Tour of KIBS (Captain Sam's part 2)

Today I will be highlighting nets 21, 11, 13, 6, and 29.  These nets run parallel to the nets I highlighted yesterday but are set further back from the edge of the dunes.  In general, these nets are located in a part of the banding station that has taller and more mature vegetation.

 Net 21

Net 21 is situated in the more "forested" part of the banding station.  Consequently, this net is mostly shaded due to a higher canopy of pines and cabbage palms.  It is one of the least productive nets at Captain Sam's.  Net 21 has captured 1,002 birds (667 new, 335 recaptures) in its 9 years however it has captured 1 of the 3 Canada Warblers that have been banded on Kiawah Island.

Net 11

Net 11 had a one year stint in 2010 but was dropped after 1 year due to it's close proximity to net 4.  At that time, I was still trying to figure out the best net configuration.  In 2018, net 11 was put back into use and has been in operation every since. Net 11 has captured 431 birds (310 new, 121 recaptures).

Net 13

Net 13 has been in use since 2011.  This is another interior net with a good amount of vegetative cover surrounding it but has no canopy cover overhead.  Net 13 has captured 1,899 birds (1,446 new, 453 recaptures).  This is a productive net and is particularly good with late season Yellow-rumped Warblers.

Net 6

Net 6 has been in operation since 2010.  This net is located along the edge of a narrow finger of high marsh.  Over the years the vegetation in the high marsh has transitioned from lower growing sea ox-eye daisy and black needlerush to taller shrubs like marsh elder.  Because it is situated near high marsh, it is a good net for Common Yellowthroats and this net has captured 452 of them.

 Net 29

Net 29 was created in 2015.  This net is located near net 6 but runs in a different orientation. Rather than running parallel to the finger of high marsh like net, it runs perpendicular to the edge of it.  Net 29 has captured 916 birds (708 new, 208 recaptures) including 1 of the 2 Connecticut Warblers that have been captured at Captain Sam's.
