Well, its been a long, hot, and humid summer for this Michigander down here in South Carolina. Most days I can't actually believe its October. But the past few days have brought a bit of respite from the summer heat. I had a visitor from Michigan this past weekend and I think she brought the cooler weather with her. Check out some of the early colors from the Mitten State!

This morning we woke up to lower 70s and overcast skies that allowed us to stay cool so we didn't sweat too much before the next few days that we anticipate to be big migratorial pushes for birds with favorable winds. Catching only 40 birds today felt like the calm before the storm, but it was enough to keep our master naturalist class happy and educated with usual suspects like American Redstarts, Gray Catbirds, and Common Yellowthroats.

But we did manage to get another Yellow-billed Cuckoo today, which is always a loud treat!

Little Bear:
In hopes of having a great migration today, we only captured a total of 45 birds, 36 newly banded birds and 9 recaptured, with a total of 12 species. The highlight of the day happened only ten minutes after opening our nets this morning we captured an Eastern Screech Owl! It was super cool to see them up close, also a first in the hand for Beth! I was excited to see how happy she was holding that owl. Having a cooler day allowed us to keep our nets open a lot longer than usual. I hope the next few days are promising as migration in South Carolina starts to kick into gear.
