It was a family affair at Captain Sam's today. We were joined by some of Dan's family members, as well as Mr. Aiden Given himself. The morning started out very slow, and we were worried that we wouldn't have much to show our visitors. Until halfway through our 3rd net run, Dan found a Cooper's Hawk of our very own in net 27! Luckily Dan thinks fast on his feet- he ran after the Coop and secured him in the net so that he couldn't escape. Then he called for backup, in the form of Kristin.
If you remember, yesterday, the Little Bear crew caught a Cooper's Hawk. With two sites, it's easy to have birding FOMO (fear of missing out), when the other site catches something cool. So it was very exciting for us to catch one too! It was even more exciting because Dan got to band him- his first raptor! And it was even more exciting for me personally, because it was my first time having a hawk in the hand!

Now we wait for a Sharp-shinned Hawk to make its way into our nets! Fingers crossed!

Little Bear:
We had a pretty slow morning at Little Bear, with only 11 birds newly banded and 13 recaptures. Among the recaps, we had a late staying Northern Waterthrush which was originally banded back on October 17th. We also caught two Northern Cardinals that were banded as adults back in 2016, making each of them at least 4 years old.
