Captain Sam's
It was another great day out at Captain Sam's this morning. We did not hear as many flyover calls as we did yesterday while opening nets, but we banded 124 new birds and had 9 recaptures of 22 species. This beat yesterday's totals even though it did not seem as busy or birdy in the early morning. Our second net run was definitely busier than the first, as can be seen by the picture of Michael Rodgers carrying a lot of birds back to the banding table, almost running out of bags in the process! (below). Common Yellowthroats made up the majority of the new birds with 72 banded. We caught a couple more Magnolia Warblers and another good looking male Hooded Warbler, but the highlight of the day was a first-of-the season Nashville Warbler for Captain Sam's. Little Bear caught one yesterday but not many are caught at KIBS so it's always nice when we catch one. Hopefully the bird numbers stay up leading to the first official cold front expected to arrive next week, -Michael Gamble

Little Bear
Out at Little Bear we had an equally good day, just edging out Captain Sam's in numbers with 113 new birds and 21 recaptures representing 21 different species. Common Yellowthroats led the way with 59 new captures, and every time we went to check the nets it seemed like we were flushing them up from the sides of the trails. There were a couple of first-of-season species as well: House Wren and Yellow-billed Cuckoo. Cuckoos have a tendency to bounce out of nets (which has already happened a couple of times at Little Bear in the past week), so it was nice to have one stay stuck for a change.
