Captain Sam's
Today was quite similar to yesterday with 33 new birds and 8
recaptures, comprised of 14 species. Once
again, we saw a good number of White-eyed Vireos with 6 new ones being banded. A Brown Thrasher and a couple Northern Mockingbirds
were also banded today. Most of the mockingbirds
we’ve seen over the last few weeks have been recaptures, so it was refreshing
to see some new ones.

Little Bear
Little Bear managed to capture 43 birds with 37 new individuals along with 6 recaptures today. Common Yellowthroats were again the majority species caught. A particularly interesting bird that was caught today was the bobolink. Like the Baltimore Oriole caught at Captain Sam's, Bobolinks belong to the Icteridae family. Bobolinks prefer tall grasslands and marshes during its migration. The migratory route of this bird is also impressive, as they winter as far south as Argentina. With round trip of about 12,500 miles, making it one of the longest migrations of any songbird.
