Captain Sam's
Dense cloud cover and a high tide made for an interesting scene this morning. We trapped 48 birds, comprising of 29 new birds and 19 recaptures. We had the opportunity to study more closely the ageing criteria of Hermit Thrushes when we captured two (one adult, one juvenile) in the same net run. . Aging these birds during the fall is generally easy because of the obvious light buffy tips on the unreplaced greater coverts of the juvenile bird. In adults, the greater coverts will be uniform in color and wear.

Little Bear
It was a surprisingly good morning out at Little Bear with 45 new birds and 19 recaptures of 15 different species. It stayed pretty consistent throughout the morning with many small flocks of Yellow-rumped Warblers dropping into the site. The overcast day kept the temperature down and allowed us to keep catching birds up until close. A few of these birds were banded last year at Little Bear, including a Northern Mockingbird that was banded as an adult on September 11, 2016. We also had a Swamp Sparrow that was banded as a hatch-year on October 21, 2016 and a Painted Bunting banded as an adult on September 18, 2016.
