Today was another blustery day filled with Gray Catbirds and Common Yellowthroats. The morning remained cool with the wind only forcing us to close one net early. Overall we had 72 new birds banded of 12 species, and recaptured 10 birds of 6 species. During these windy days a lot of birds can see the nets moving and change direction last minute, thankfully young Catbirds haven't mastered the trick yet!

Little Bear
Strong winds out of the northeast kept a number of our nets closed today. We still had a fairly productive day for how windy it was. Gray Catbirds led the way (17), and we totaled 37 new and 7 recaptures of 10 species. We noticed multiple birds who would turn away from the nets last minute, as the wind made the nets rather visible. We had 3 interesting recaps from previous banding seasons: a Painted Bunting banded last year in August and a Gray Catbird banded last year in October. The highlight was a Brown Thrasher who was banded at Little Bear as an AHY (after hatch-year) on 9/8/2015. That makes this bird at least 4 years old and until today, it had only been recaptured one other time on 10/25/2016. He may be a bird who passes through here yearly during migration or a bird that breeds locally or winters on Kiawah. Importantly, this gives us valuable data on survival for this species and is a testament for why banding is so important.
