We banded a total of 52 new birds today with 24 of those being Catbirds! Catbirds also made up 12 of our 13 total recaptured birds for the day, so it's safe to say all of us have gotten to band our fair share of this charismatic species. Besides Catbirds, we managed to capture 11 other species today, including several beautiful Black-throated Blue Warblers, a Brown Thrasher, and a lovely hatch-year male Ruby-throated Hummingbird. This little guy was running low on his fat reserves for migration, and likely stopped on Kiawah to fuel up before continuing to his wintering grounds farther south. Notice the few "ruby" throat feathers in the photo below which enabled us to determine that this bird was a young male.

Little Bear:
Today was a slow warm day. We had a total of 28 newly banded birds and 3 recaptures. Even though the wind was not as strong today, we still didn't have much bird movement.
My favorite part of the day was catching the Yellow-billed Cuckoo! This was my first in hand experience of seeing this beautiful bird up close.
