FOS Saltmarsh Sparrow

Captain Sam's

Today was a cool and blustery day with overcast skies; a welcome relief from the heat and sun of summer. Despite the wind forcing the closure of some nets, we got a good number of birds with 66 banded and 43 recaptures of 22 species. Six members of the Kiawah Conservancy came out to visit us and were treated to informative talks by Aaron, and the chance to see many interesting birds. They even got to see the bird-of-the-day, a Lincoln's Sparrow! We rarely catch these sparrows during migration so it was a real treat to see one today.

Little Bear

It was a very windy morning out at Little Bear, which made it difficult to keep many of our nets open for the duration of the morning. The nets we were able to keep open were most likely visible to any birds that were moving around throughout the day. Even in these conditions, we still caught 30 new birds and 10 recaptures of a surprisingly good diversity of 15 species. The highlight of the morning came on the first net run when we caught a first-of-the-season Saltmarsh Sparrow! We usually only catch this species when we are marsh sparrow banding but every once in awhile one finds our nets during the fall. This is around the time saltmarsh sparrows are returning from their breeding grounds further north to Kiawah Island for the winter. We also caught an Eastern Wood-Pewee and a Blue Grosbeak, both species we do not catch often at KIBS.
