CAPTAIN SAM'S

Even though the radar looked better last night than it did the night before, I captured fewer birds today due to the northeast winds.  I still managed a pretty good morning with 31 new birds and 16 recaptures of 9 different species.  A bulk of the birds today were Yellow-rumped Warblers which is typical for this time of year.  One interested bird captured today was a Palm Warbler (Western).  Not because it is rare or uncommon but rather because it had some unusual plumage aspects for this time of year.  Western Palm Warblers in the fall are usually a fairly drab brown overall with the exception of yellow undertail coverts and a yellowish rump.  The bird that I banded today seemed to have retained some of its breeding plumage.  It had a considerable amount of rufous on crown, red centers to the uppertail coverts, and dark brown edging on the inner greater coverts and median coverts.  I will have to upload the photos tomorrow because my laptop died and I forgot my power cord in the office.
