Today was a pretty windy day. We opened up all our nets this morning hoping the wind would settle down for a bit. Unfortunately the wind got the best of us, making us close our nets earlier. With the little time we had with our open nets, we captured a total of 40 birds. 37 newly banded birds and recaptured, with a total of 14 species. The highlight of today was capturing a handsome adult male Northern Parula. See how stunning he looks?

An usual bird that we captured today was a male Northern Cardinal. He seems to have a lighter red pigment than a typical male cardinal would have. Thus making him more of a pink hue. Due to the molt strategy that cardinals have, it is hard to determine their age. They do a complete molt of all flight feathers, meaning they replace old with new. So this could mean he could have been born this year or an older male from the prior year.
