Red-shouldered Hawk (Round 2!)

Captain Sam's:

Today ended up being a wash-out when we got soaked through multiple times by scattered downpours over the west end of the island. Though we managed to catch 22 birds before we had to race around closing nets. One of those birds was a recapture Red-shouldered Hawk - the one that was just banded here at Captain Sam's last week! Pretty miraculous to catch it once, let alone twice. Ben and I were both at Little Bear when this bird was originally caught, so it was perfect that we were at Captain Sam's today and able to see it in the hand this time around.

Little Bear:

It was a bit of an ill-fated attempt at banding today, with menacing storms on the horizon keeping bird activity low, and a sense of uncertainty as to if we'd get rained on. The first rain shower hit us earlier then expected, but just as quickly as we ran around closing nets the rain cloud passed over, and the sun was shining again before we knew what hit us. After a couple more inauspicious net checks without many birds, we decided to close the nets for the day. It turned out to be a good decision, as it started raining again just as we finished getting everything shut down. We didn't end up catching anything worth writing home about, despite our valiant attempt. Scattered showers are still in the forecast for the next few days here, but hopefully our hard work will eventually pay off with some more interesting birds later in the week.
