Kicking off KIBS with a great start!

 Captain Sam's:

We started out the first day of banding with a bang! With a total of 53 birds, our highlights consist of Eastern Kingbirds, Great-crested Flycatcher, and of course all the other species we manage to capture today. We started off the morning with some great birds for everyone to observe and get back into the groove of a fall migration banding station. Everyone got to check out unique molts in Painted Buntings, since some of our birds were considered hatch years, second years, and after second years. Click on this link to see how we are aging Painted Buntings. This post was created in 2020 to show the aging criteria that we look at.

My favorite highlight from today would be seeing an American Redstart. I know we can catch quite a bit of them throughout the season but they definitely have a special place in my heart. This young male had advancements in is molt, which allowed him to show off more vibrant colors in his wing. Instead of the typical dark yellow coloration, this young male had more of a nice orange wash over some of his flight feathers. As shown below. You can see that the right wing is showing more orange colors than usual. Pretty neat for a first day catch!

Also thank you to Jenna, Nancy and Michael for starting out the season with us!
Nancy and Michael use to work at KIBS, so it was like a reunion for the banding station seeing old members join us again.

Little Bear:

After a little rest up from working this morning at Captain Sam's, we traveled on down to Little Bear to scope out what it might look like. We cleared up so much needed path maintenance and net lanes. We carried out some boxes that we would need at our station there but still have a few more to do before a full run day. Hopefully soon we can see what Little Bear has to offer.
